OK, so mom & dad said no to a new car. But if you’ve been walking past rows of scooters parked on your campus and thinking, “That looks like fun,” you’re not wrong. Scooters are one of the easiest, most affordable ways to get around — no circling for parking, no gas-guzzling, no problem. Whether you’re zipping between classes, heading to the library, or just cruising for coffee, here’s what you need to know before hopping on two wheels in Missouri.

They’re compact, simple to ride, and get well over 100 mpg — that’s a whole semester on less then your average brunch. Here’s everything you need to know before you hit the road.
SCOOT 101 AMA: We know you have questions. Let’s answer some general ones to help you get acquainted.
🛵 Do I Need a Motorcycle License?
Nope. For scooters with an engine 49cc or smaller (often labeled as “50cc” or just “50”), all you need is a regular driver’s license. No motorcycle endorsement, no written test — just your standard license and a sense of adventure.
🪪 Do I Need to Register My Scooter or Get a License Plate?
Not in Missouri.
Scooters 49cc or under don’t require traditional registration or plates with the DMV. That means less paperwork and more time to ride. See, MO ain't so bad.
If you’re in another state, check your local laws — some require special “49cc plates,” (MO included) which you can easily grab at Flying Tiger Motorcycles if needed.
💰 Will I Owe Taxes After Buying?
Here’s the breakdown:
-
Sales tax: Paid when you buy a new scooter (applied at checkout).
-
Property tax: None! Missouri doesn’t assess property tax on scooters 49cc and under.
Translation: your wallet gets a break.
📄 Does My New Scooter Come with a Title?
Not exactly, but close.
Every new scooter ships with a Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MSO) — basically its birth certificate. It lists the scooter’s VIN (vehicle identification umber), manufacturing details, weight, and power. The MSO acts as your title unless your state requires you to register.
🧾 Is Insurance Required?
In Missouri, no — but it’s smart.
While insurance isn’t required for scooters 49cc and under, many riders choose to get it for peace of mind. It can protect you (and your Buddy) from theft, damage, or accidents. Check with your insurance provider about coverage options specific to scooters.
🧤 Should I Wear Protective Gear?
Absolutely.
Scooter riders don’t need to look like road warriors, but a few essentials can make a huge difference:
-
DOT-approved helmet
-
Armored or padded jacket
-
Gloves
-
Long pants
-
Closed-toe shoes
Even short rides deserve smart protection. Plus, let’s be honest — a retro helmet and riding jacket look pretty cool.
🧭 Does Flying Tiger Offer a Riding Course?
Our team gives every new rider a quick intro when you pick up your scooter — including starting, braking, turning, and basic safety.
If you want to level up your skills, we can connect you with local riding schools that specialize in scooter and motorcycle safety courses.
🧢 Can I Test Ride Before Buying?
Yes!
We usually have a couple of scooters prepped and ready to go. All you’ll need is:
-
A valid driver’s license
-
A signed waiver of liability
We’ll even provide helmets for the test ride.
Just give us a heads-up before stopping by so we can make sure your preferred model is ready to roll.
